“Liposuction,” jokes John Berardi, creator of Precision Nutrition. “You go to a place, some guy takes it out, and an hour later it’s gone.”

That said, despite this quick and easy alternative, the fat is likely to come back, he concludes. “We didn’t changed any lifestyle patterns that accumulated the fat in the first place.”

In short, exercise, nutrition and lifestyle changes are essential to getting lean.

#1. Work on mindset

As a coach, Berardi says the key is acknowledging how important change psychology is in helping a client reach their goals. Change psychology is looking at how thinking, feeling and behaviour changes throughout a person’s life and how it affects their fitness goals.

“How do people nudge other people along the right pathway,” he says. “How can I be a lifestyle architect? How can I motivate people to do the right thing and motivate them?”

The easy part is writing a program for our clients, but if the client doesn’t follow through with it, then the program is meaningless, Berardi says.

Change psychology is knowing people need to be in a calorie deficit and they need to move, and how to get them to adhere to it, he adds. “Once you have a client’s buy in and are in tune with where there are psychologically, all three components of exercise, nutrition and lifestyle can be engineered together.”

2. Diet & exercise are a must.

Berardi notes coaches know the fundamentals of getting lean: a mixed module of exercise, which includes strength training, cardio (both high intensity and endurance), and creating a caloric deficit in nutrition. The crucial step is fitting it into a client’s lifestyle, which could be going for a walk after dinner with your partner, walking up the stairs instead of using the elevator, or saying no to snacks after a certain time.

Figure out a way to collaborate with your client on a program they will adhere to, Berardi adds. If the client is not on board with the program and the homework assigned, then they are already unlikely to succeed in their goals.

“Some kind of controlled food intake, and some kind of work out module,” he states.

3. Become a lifestyle architect.

Once you tackle the physical context of exercise and nutrition, the third component is how it fits into a person’s life.

“Everyone’s life is slightly different in that way,” explains Berardi. “After creating a program with a client, the idea is that a client is an active participant in the process.”

Getting a client to go from precontemplation to action requires the acknowledgement of the steps in between. The transtheoretical model addresses the psychologically steps a client will take in their fitness journey. Coaches with an understanding of where their clients are mentally will have better success with clients reaching their fitness goals.

“It’s a philosophical problem that our industry has in which we think our work stops at the prescription. But it doesn’t. It stops at the successful implementation of the prescription,” explains Berardi. ”The mental shift needs to be I need to take responsibility for the outcome and not just the prescription. If I have a difficult client who has trouble doing their homework, it’s on me to figure out how to get them to do it all the time.”
The best coaches are able to listen to their clients and have them successfully implement changes into each aspect of their life: exercise, nutrition and lifestyle change.
