Curiosity Kills Average

We often come across people who are feeling stuck in their job and life. Everything feels average, their life, their job and their relationships. They have lost the motivation for what they do.

The question is: How do we get unstuck?

The answer: CURIOSITY.

What curiosity does, is it leads you to discover your passion. You must seek to listen, to absorb, to immerse, to traverse. It is not an instant process, you are not going to wake up one day with a passion. You must work towards discovering it.

Cal Newport in his book, “So Good They Can’t Ignore You”, dedicates the first chapters of his book to show the scientific evidence that following your passion is a bad idea. In fact his first rule in the book is, Don’t Follow Your Passion. While this may seem counterintuitive, what you learn in the book for the most part is that there is a period of self-discovery and skill building required before you truly develop your passion for something. No secrets or short cuts, you have to work hard to develop a level of mastery before you can truly feel passion for something.
That is when your curious nature will come into play. When someone is curious, it drives an insatiable quest for knowledge, culture, novelty, experience, beauty, art and connection. The key to success or finding your passion is to remain curious.

It means routinely examining the world through fresh eyes, and using those eyes to seek learning in places you would have never considered before. Compelling yourself to experiment with different things, different thoughts, different environments is part of the process to truly discover your passion.

Once you have put the work in, your passion will reveal itself. That passion is the fuel of your desire, because when you pursue it, you will find yourself tripped up by failures and other obstacles. You can’t let that get to you, instead let that ignite the humility within you.
It will transition you to the “I don’t even know what I don’t know” zone which will reveal to you unknown personal capabilities, strengths and potential to be someone who you could only ever dream of becoming.
It will make you change the way you look at things, how you do things, who and what you spend your time doing. It will inspire a willingness to change your mind and empower you to embrace your mistakes and fuel your willingness to learn from others.

Change is never easy, embracing it makes you more humble, gives you perspective on how little you know and it seeds your desire to plunge head first into the vast ocean of discovery that lies ahead of you. So, humility drives you to be curious and in response curiosity makes you humbler.

If Humility is the soul, curiosity is the mind. Humility is the fertile soil of knowledge, that requires the water of curiosity to create abundance. Both work in a beautiful cohesion to build a more passionate you.

There is a popular saying that “Curiosity killed the cat”, the saying really should be “curiosity kills being stuck” or even better “curiosity kills being average”. Curiosity, pushes you to test your capabilities, face your fears, develop your passion and pursue a fantastic and fulfilling life.

As DJ GZA founding member of the Wu Tang Clan, MIT and Harvard guest lecturer once said, “Live a life full of humility, gratitude, intellectual curiosity, and never stop learning.”
